The CEO of Meta, Mark Zuckerberg, has been spending a fortune on his Metaverse dream, which has swiftly transitioned from science fiction to reality for many tech leaders. Zuckerberg has now unveiled some of the company's advancements in high-end displays for VR experiences.

At a press event, Zuckerberg showed off some virtual reality (VR) research prototype headsets that the company's Reality Labs division is working on, which he claims will enable them to make displays that are as vivid and realistic as the physical world.

Meta's VR display research is centred on developing a new software solution that includes Varifocal technology that enhances focus, distortion correction capability to minimize warping effects, higher resolutions, and High Dynamic Range (HDR) technology for VR.

The Holocake 2 is the company's thinnest and lightest VR research prototype built with holographic displays. It is a fully functional PC-tethered headset that can run any existing PC VR title.

"The key here is that, thanks to holography, everything is thin and flat," Michael Abrash, Chief Scientist, Reality Labs, Meta said. "The varifocal technology is flat, and so are all the holographic films used for Holocake, as well as prescription correction and eye tracking. And so it's easy to keep adding thin, flat technologies. This means that the end product can pack more functionality into a smaller package than anything that exists today."

The prototype expands on the company's 2020 holographic optics concept, which lacked critical components and resembled a pair of sunglasses. Meta says that this is their first attempt at a fully functional holographic optics headset.

Meta is still working on producing a self-contained light source to power the headset, likely a laser, rather than the OLEDs that are usually employed these days. "We'll need to do a lot of engineering to achieve a consumer-viable laser that meets our specs: that's safe, low-cost, and efficient, and that can fit a slim VR headset," says Zuckerberg. "Honestly, as of today, the jury is still out on a suitable laser source."

With an external display on the front, the company is also designing it in a way to show your eyes and facial expressions to outside viewers.

Mirror Lake is basically theoretical and has never actually been built. The design would feature Holocake 2's tiny optics, as well as the best HDR capabilities and resolution.

Mirror Lake would also have an outward-facing display that projects a picture of the user's eyes, like the Holocake 2.

The headset will likely have a ski goggles-like form factor that'll include the best of the technologies that the Display Systems Research has been developing over the past seven years into the best form factor, proving how really a next-gen display system could look like.

The Meta CEO also shared a glimpse of two other research prototype headsets, codenamed Butterscotch and Starburst, which the company is working on at its Reality Labs division.

Zuckerberg said "We estimate that getting to 20/20 vision across the full human field of view would take more than 8K resolution,"

Last month, Meta was also reported working on four new VR headsets that will be introduced in by 2024.
