Tennessee residents will be able to enjoy shopping tax-free for a limited time in July and August. The Tennessee General Assembly has approved two more sales tax holidays in addition to the traditional sales tax holiday on clothing, school supplies, and computers. 

Back-to-school items like clothing, supplies and computers will be exempt from sales tax for 3 days, beginning Friday, July 29. Grocery items will also be exempt from sales tax during the entire month of August.

Here is everything you need to know about the sales tax holiday in Tennessee.

Tennessee's traditional sales tax holiday on clothing, school supplies and computers will begin at 12:01 a.m. on Friday, July 29, 2022, and will end at 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, July 31, 2022.  Items sold online are also eligible.  Items must be purchase for personal use, not for business or trade, according to the Tennessee governor's website. 

Items that are available to purchase tax-free is general apparel that costs $100 or less per item, such as shirts, pants, socks, shoes, dresses, etc, and school and art supplies less than $100 or less per item, such as binders, backpacks, crayons, paper, pens, pencils, rulers, paints, drawing pads, and artist paintbrushes.

A new grocery sales tax suspension this year will exempt food & food ingredients from  tax, according to the Tennessee governor's website. This tax holiday will be effect from 12:01 a.m. Monday, Aug. 1 and will end at 11:59 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 31.

A sales tax holiday for gun safes and gun safety devices that went into effect July 1, 2021 was extended for an additional year to end on June 30, 2023, at 11:59 p.m. During this period, retail sales of gun safes and gun safety devices are exempt from sales and use tax.  

A “gun safe” is defined as a locking container or other enclosure equipped with a padlock, key lock, combination lock, or other locking device that is designed and intended for the secure storage of one or more firearms.

A “gun safety device” is defined as any integral device to be equipped or installed on a firearm that permits the user to program the firearm to operate only for specified persons designated by the user through computerized locking devices or other means integral to and permanently part of the firearm.
